Our Learning Pathways

At PL6 Learning Hub, we provide a calm, structured and supportive alternative learning environment for children and young people who may find larger or more traditional education settings difficult to access.

GCSE Pathway

The GCSE pathway offers focused preparation in core academic subjects within PL6's small-group setting. These sessions suit learners who are ready to work towards GCSE qualifications but benefit from smaller groups, more individual support and a calmer learning environment.

Functional Skills Pathway

The Functional Skills pathway provides structured English and Mathematics teaching for learners working towards nationally recognised qualifications.

PL6 Learning Hub is an Open Awards approved Functional Skills examination centre, enabling learners to work towards qualifications from Entry Level through to Levels 1 and 2, with examinations available in the familiar PL6 environment.

Secondary Pathway

The Secondary Pathway offers flexible English, Mathematics and wider curriculum support for secondary-age learners who need a smaller and more personalised approach to education.

Sessions run across the week and combine core academic learning with confidence building, problem solving, independence and preparation for future qualifications. Learners can progress from the Secondary Pathway into Functional Skills, GCSE preparation or a personalised programme, depending on their development.

Primary Pathway

The Primary Pathway is designed for children approximately 8–11 years old who benefit from learning in a small, friendly and supportive environment. English and Mathematics sit at the heart of the programme, alongside activities that develop curiosity, communication, problem solving and a positive relationship with learning.

Personalised & EOTAS Programmes

For learners needing a more individualised offer, PL6 can design personalised programmes incorporating small-group learning, one-to-one support, English, Mathematics, Science, Functional Skills and GCSE preparation.

September 2026 Timetable

From September 2026, PL6 Learning Hub will offer a structured weekly programme designed around small-group, calm and supportive learning, with clear pathways towards recognised qualifications.

GCSE Pathway – 10am–12pm

For learners working towards GCSE qualifications and requiring focused support in the core curriculum.

Tuesday: GCSE English Language & Literature
Wednesday: GCSE Mathematics
Thursday: GCSE Science

Teaching is delivered in small groups with a strong emphasis on confidence, engagement and preparation for formal qualifications.

Primary Pathway

Friday: 10am–12pm

A small, supportive weekly group for learners approximately 8–11 years old, focusing on English, Maths, confidence and maintaining a positive relationship with learning.

Functional Skills Pathway – English & Maths

For learners working towards Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 and Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2.

Monday: 1pm - 3pm
Wednesday: 1pm - 3pm

Each two-hour session combines English and Maths, with teaching tailored to the learner's current level and intended qualification.

PL6 is an Open Awards approved centre, enabling learners to work towards and sit recognised Functional Skills qualifications through the Hub.

Examination Provision

PL6 also operates an approved examination provision for Open Awards Functional Skills English and Mathematics, including:

Entry Level 1 • Entry Level 2 • Entry Level 3 • Level 1 • Level 2

Dedicated examination sessions can be arranged separately from normal teaching sessions, with reasonable adjustments considered for learners with SEND and additional needs.

Secondary Pathway

Small-group education for secondary-aged learners who may need an alternative to a traditional classroom environment, additional educational support or help rebuilding confidence and engagement.

Sessions available:

The pathway supports core English and Maths alongside broader learning, confidence, independence and re-engagement.

Learners can attend individual sessions or have a programme commissioned across several sessions by their family, school, local authority, EOTAS/EHCP arrangements or other education service.

Could PL6 Be The Right Fit?

PL6 Learning Hub Referral Process At PL6 Learning Hub, we follow a structured referral process to ensure that each young person receives the right support. Below is an outline of our four-stage process:

Initial Inquiry & Assessment The referral process begins when a school, parent, or carer contacts us with an inquiry. We will discuss the young person's needs and conduct an initial assessment to determine whether our provision is a suitable fit.

A Chance to Visit & Discussion If PL6 Learning Hub appears to be a suitable option, we will arrange a visit at a mutually convenient time. This visit provides an opportunity to explore the Hub and learn more about what we have to offer. We encourage parents or carers to bring the young person along so they can see the environment and get a feel for whether it is the right place for them. During the visit, we will discuss how sessions are organised in more detail, as well as our expectations for engagement and behaviour.

Package Confirmation Following the visit, we will provide feedback and confirm whether we can offer a placement. We will outline the details of the tailored support package and discuss any necessary arrangements, including funding. We encourage open conversations with the young person about whether they feel PL6 Learning Hub is the right fit for them. We ask for a decision at the earliest opportunity.

Successful Placement Once all parties agree to proceed, we will send out the referral paperwork for completion. Once the necessary documents are returned, we can often begin the placement within a week.
